2023 STEM and ASTEM Rankings: WCH Tops the comprehensive ranking for the 11th Consecutive Year

On July 19, 2024, the 2023 Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) and the 2019 to 2023 Accumulative Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (ASTEM) of Chinese Medical Schools / Chinese Hospital were officially released. West China Hospital of Sichuan University has been ranked first in the national comprehensive STEM hospital ranking for 11 consecutive years and also tops the five-year ASTEM ranking. President Luo Fengming led the Science and Technology Department and relevant disciplinary teams to attend the press conference.

The 2023 STEM of Chinese Hospital covered 2,943 tertiary hospitals nationwide, while the STEM of Chinese Medical Schools research covered 110 independent medical colleges and comprehensive universities with medical disciplines. This year's evaluation system was significantly improved in six areas: 1. Increasing the weight of direct indicators to emphasize actual contributions and performance; 2. Strengthening quality control management to ensure the objectivity and fairness of data; 3. Focusing on the evaluation of clinical scientific and technological achievements, adhering to the clinical value orientation; 4. Valuing the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, highlighting the orientation of high-quality creation; 5. Adding nuclear medicine, radiology, and ultrasound medicine to meet the needs of imaging-related discipline construction; 6. Improving the punishment mechanism for academic misconduct and continuously strengthening scientific integrity.

The ranking covers 34 disciplines, West China Hospital of Sichuan University had a total of 18 disciplines in the top three, with radiology, ultrasound, nursing, anesthesiology, and urology ranking first; thoracic surgery, psychiatry, general surgery, critical care medicine, and emergency medicine ranking second; and respirology, neurology, nuclear medicine, oncology, tuberculosis, gastroenterology, nephrology, and orthopedic surgery ranking third. The hospital had 27 disciplines in the top five and 29 disciplines in the top ten, with the number of disciplines in both categories ranking first in the nation.
