English monograph of Molluscum Contagiosum, Prof. Ran Yuping as Editor in Chief, officially published online

Recently, the English monograph Molluscum Contagiosum: Epidemiology, Pathogenesis, Clinical Manifestations, Dermoscopy, Ultrastructure and Evidence Based Treatment, by Prof. Ran Yuping of Department of Dermovenereology, West China Hospital, as Editor in Chief, was officially published online by internationally-renowned Nova Science publishers.

This book elaborates the epidemiology and etiology of molluscum contagiosum virus, especially its clinical manifestations, dermoscopic manifestations and ultra-structures. Upon its official release worldwide, it has become an important source of reference book for the basic researchers of poxvirus, pediatric department as well as to the physicians of dermatology and medical students.

Molluscum contagiosum is a common virus of infectious skin disease. However, no extensive and profound researches have been devoted to this disease in terms of clinical, etiology, epidemiology and treatments. This book has described and discussed the ultra-structure and development process of molluscum contagiosum virus through a transmission electron microscope, helping clinicians to learn about changes in different images of the ultra-structure and development process of the virus. It has also conducted evidence-based reviews on intervening measures such as local medications, physical and chemical interventions, as well as therapeutic schemes such as laser treatment, playing an important role in the evidence-based treatment of molluscum contagiosum. Each chapter has incorporated some original materials, images and analysis results, with the focus on enhancing clinicians’ knowledge of molluscum contagiosum--the infectious poxvirus skin disease.

One of the highlights of this book was demonstrated by the growing number of dermoscopic images of molluscum contagiosum skin lesion, including the typical and non-typical features, observed under the polarized or non-polarized light as well as some special parts such as the eyelid, auricle and vulva. The characteristics of skin lesions in different development stages over the years have not gone beyond the descriptions in the traditional textbooks. Thus this book assists clinicians to gain a more comprehensive insight into the diverse skin lesions by providing scientific basis and methods for timely treatment after the early diagnosis of molluscum contagiosum.

Prof. Ran Yuping’s team has conducted extensive researches on the clinical manifestation, dermoscopic manifestation and ultra-structure of molluscum contagiosum over the past years. Its latest research result--Image Gallery: Dermoscopy of perianal molluscum contagiosum in a child caused by molluscum contagiosum virus subtype I, has been published on British Journal of Dermatology 2019;180(3):e68 (IF: 6.714).
