Department setting: The Day Surgery Center of West China Hospital, Sichuan University was established in October 2009, which is the first medical center that provides standardized day surgery services in the country. Now it has become the vice-chairman unit of the Chinese Ambulatory Surgery Alliance (CASA). 47 health care professionals were recruited in Day Surgery Center, including 1 professor/director of the center, 3 attending physicians, 3 doctors and 40 nurses. Among these 7 physicians, one has doctoral degree and 6 have master degrees. Day Surgery Center includes several Wards (Main campus and Yongning Branch) which contains 52 beds in total, Outpatient Operating Room, Wound Treatment Center and Puncture Diagnosis and Treatment Center.
Medical services: Currently, day surgery modes have been implemented in over 20 major surgical specialties, excluding Neurosurgery and Cardiac Surgery, and it also involves some non-surgery departments, such as Cardiology, Gastroenterology and Respiratory Medicine. More than 200 surgical types were performed in the Day Surgery Center. From October 2009 to December 2018, 144,007 cases of day surgeries were performed successfully. Noteworthy is that the patient satisfaction rate was up to 99.49%. And 24,960 cases were performed in 2019, meanwhile, the ratio of day surgery to traditional selective surgery reached 25.11%.
Innovation achievements: Day Surgery Center has achieved the First and Third Prizes for Technical Innovation of the Chinese Hospital Association (CHA), Third Prize for Progress in Science and Technology of Sichuan Province, the Chinese Medical Technology Progress Award, the Top 10 Popular Cases of Improved Medical Service Technologies under the Hospital Competition for the Best Medical Practice, Top 10 Valuable Cases for Quality Management of the Chinese Hospital Management Award, or the like. Up to date, over 100 scientific papers associated with day surgery services have been published.
The Puncture Diagnosis and Treatment Center, founded on March 15, 2010, now conducts puncture diagnosis and treatment of PICC catheterization and maintenance, fine needle puncture, ultrasound-guided puncture, bone marrow aspiration and thoracentesis. The PICC Catheterization Center was established in 2014. Currently, the Center has 5 wound intravenous infusion specialist nurses in its list of staff, conducts more than 2,000 operations of outpatient puncture, nearly 1,000 consultations across the hospital and carries out nearly 18,000 cases of PICC catheter maintenance each year. As the Training Base for Intravenous Infusion Specialist Nurses of Sichuan Province, the Center has trained thousands of intravenous infusion specialist nursing talents in the country.
The Wound Treatment Center, founded on March 15, 2010, has three international enterostomal therapists, three international wound therapists and three wound specialist nurses, and performs nearly 50,000 cases of wound treatment each year. The Center has been dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic and difficult wounds and, in addition to opening the would enterostomal nursing clinic, it started the MDT clinic for chronic wounds since 2019. Up till now, it has successfully treated and cured varied forms of chronic wounds including vascular ulcers in lower extremities, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot, chronic postoperative wounds, radiotherapy wounds and tuberculosis wounds in thousands of cases. The Center has set up multidisciplinary wound treatment teams with other disciplines to effectively improve the success rate of treating and curing chronic wounds. Meanwhile, as the Training Base for International Wound Therapists and Wound Specialist Nurses of Sichuan Province, the Center has cultivated thousands of would nursing specialists.
