The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery of West China Hospital of Sichuan University was founded in 1929. Its predecessor, Chengdu Cunren Hospital, is the largest eye, ear, nose, and throat specialty hospital in China and Southeast Asia, and it is also one of the main sources of otolaryngology in China. Famous Chinese otolaryngologists such as Dr. Jiang Sichang, Dr. Zheng Zhongli, Dr. Bu Guozhen, etc. have worked in this department. Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery was approved as a master's degree and doctoral degree authorization point in China in 1978 and 1986, and became a national post-doctoral mobile station unit in 1992. It was officially designated as a national clinical drug test base for otolaryngology in 2007. In 2010, it was awarded the national key clinical specialty. At present, the Department has 40 doctors and 34 nurses, including 10 professors, 11 associate professors, 4 doctoral supervisors, and 10 master supervisors. 80% of official doctors have a doctorate degree, and more than a dozen doctors have successively gone to the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Belgium and other countries to study. The Department has 104 beds; 14 outpatient diagnosis rooms (including Wenjiang Branch Campus), the number of outpatients in 2019 reached 259,435. It is responsible for the training of doctoral, master, and undergraduate students. Also the Department is dedicating to standardized training of physicians and a number of research programs from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Science and Technology Support Program, the Doctoral Fund of the State Education Commission, the Ministry of Health, and the Provincial Science and Technology Commission.

1. Otology: comprehensively carries out special examinations, diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of various ear diseases (including facial nerve diseases), including hearing reconstruction, cochlear implantation and various hearing compensation technologies; develops various vertigo diseases special examination, diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment. Fundamental research on inner ear electrophysiology was supported by two National Natural Science Foundations.
2. Rhinology: diagnosis and treatment of various nasal and sinus diseases, nasal endoscopic sinus surgery, cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea repair, nasal-sphenoid sinus-pituitary tumor resection, nasal skull base surgery, and nose-eye related operations Surgery. Its technical level has reached the advanced level in China. It established the Upper Respiratory Laboratory (URL) in cooperation with the University of Ghent, Belgium, to comprehensively carry out basic clinical researches in the nasal field such as rhinosinusitis, allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps, etc., which has been funded by 7 National Natural Science Foundations and published many important papers.
3. Throat: The throat sub-specialty is divided into snoring and voice disease diagnosis and treatment centers. The hysteria group, the respiratory department, the respiratory sleep monitoring center, and the anesthesia department jointly established a respiratory sleep disease group to carry out the assessment of snoring disease (obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome) and various comprehensive medical and surgical treatments. The Voice Center is the most powerful voice medical center in Sichuan Province and even the entire southwestern China. It has set a model in the province in terms of regulating the diagnosis and treatment of voice diseases, conducting various high-level professional treatments, and assessing and testing voice functions, and it has established a complete standardized diagnosis and treatment system. It had led in the research and treatment of rare and intractable diseases in the province and the first-class level in the country, carrying out several new technologies such as voice training, early cancer screening, and botulinum toxin injection to treat spastic vocal disorders, laryngeal web scar release + silicone mold implantation, laryngeal condylar cartilage resection, laryngeal fat fascia injection and filling, type I thyroid cartilage angioplasty, laryngeal micro suture, laryngeal nodule, etc. The center has established a high-level scientific and clinical cooperation platform through academic exchanges with advanced voice centers such as Hong Kong and the United States, especially with the high-level clinical and scientific multi-dimensional strategic cooperation established by the Department of Hearing, Speech and Pathology of the University of Hong Kong. So far, the Center has undertaken a number of national, provincial and municipal level projects, especially in the areas of voice and swallowing functions, which have filled a gap in Sichuan Province.
4. Head and Neck Surgery: Comprehensive diagnosis and surgical treatment of head and neck tumors, repair and reconstruction surgery after head and neck tumor resection, and free jejunal transplantation for advanced hypopharyngeal cancer surgery have achieved good results. And together with experts from the Department of Radiation Oncology, Pathology, and National Biotherapy Laboratory of our hospital, the Head and Neck Cancer Research Group has been formed, dedicating to the standard treatment of head and neck tumors, scientific research, and academic discussion.
5. Hearing center: It has 6 listening rooms, 4 auditory speech rehabilitation rooms, and world-class audiological testing equipment. More than 20 hearing testing projects and hearing rehabilitation methods have been conducted in line with international standards and have reached the internationally advanced level. Its services range from newborn babies to the elderly, from the discovery and diagnosis of hearing problems to counselling for hearing and speech rehabilitation and hearing protection issues. Since the center started the earliest graduate audiology education program and standardized training education program for hearing technicians in China, it has become an important base for the training of advanced / intermediate level audiology professionals in China. The Center has cooperated with the House Ear Research Institute of the United States, and has made significant progress and good results in the evaluation of hearing rehabilitation effects for deaf children and the development of young children's speech audiometry methods. The Center is also the base of the UNICEF bilingual project for deaf children.
6. Cochlear Implant Center: It is one of the ten hospitals nationwide designated by the Ministry of Health for a donation project named “Hearing Reconstruction Qicong Operation”. It is the first batch of designated centers for cochlear implantation in the National Financial Eleventh and Twelfth Five-Year Deaf Children's Rehabilitation Rescue Project. Since its first cochlear implantation in 1999, it has helped thousands of patients with severely severe deafness rebuild their hearing.
7. Dizziness Specialty: Since the 1980s, the Department has been researching dizziness at the forefront in China. Currently, there is a special dizziness clinic that performs various vestibular function tests and other dizziness tests, and it has helped a large number of patients.
8 Nursing: The Department is a comprehensive nursing ward. The nursing team has specialized nursing procedures and the ability to use it skillfully. It has adhered to a "patient-centered" service philosophy, has a good team spirit, has strong learning atmosphere, and has high overall nursing quality. The team is famous for its comprehensive mastery of specialized nursing technology and skills, especially in critical, difficult illnesses and new technologies with its own nursing features.
