The Clinical Pharmacy Department of West China Hospital, SCU, encompasses drug supply and dispensing, production and quality control of hospital pharmaceutical preparations, clinical pharmacy practice and standardized training, pharmacy research and education. Focusing on “guaranteeing the quality and safety of drugs, and promoting the rational use of drugs”, the department continuously improves its service quality, optimizes the whole-process management system covering drug purchasing, storage, dispensing, use and evaluation, and enhances the rational use of drugs. Meanwhile, it's also the Sichuan key discipline (Grade A) of clinical pharmacy, Sichuan Pharmacy Administration & Quality Control Center (West China) and Sichuan Center for ADR Monitoring, and has been awarded by the competent authority for a couple of times.
Talent team: The Clinical Pharmacy Department has more than 300 staff members, including 6 professors, 15 associate professors, over 10 with PhDs, over 20 with master’s degree, 1 doctoral supervisor, 3 master supervisors, as well as 2 candidates for academic leader of Sichuan and 2 academic leaders of the Health Commission of Sichuan Province. Currently, many staff members serve as the member of Clinical Pharmacy-related Branch of national association, including Chinese Medical Association, Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, Chinese Pharmacological Society, etc. A few serve as the chairman, vice-chairman of Clinical Pharmacy-related Branch of Sichuan Medical Association, Sichuan Pharmaceutical Association, Sichuan Preventive Medicine Association, etc. A few of staff members act as executive editors or editorial board members with such magazines as Chinese Journal of Hospital Pharmacy, China Pharmacy, Chinese Journal of Evidence-based Medicine, China Pharmaceutics, etc.
Setting of functional units: The Clinical Pharmacy Department is composed of pharmacy store, inpatient pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy, emergency pharmacy, TCM pharmacy, hospital pharmaceutical preparations department, quality control laboratory, TPN compounding center, pharmacy intravenous admixture service center, ADR monitoring center, clinical pharmacy center, and laboratory of clinical pharmacy and adverse drug reaction.
Research direction and output of the Clinical Pharmacy Department: Researches on evidence-based and rational drug use, research on drug development and transformation, research on drug mechanism and application, research on big data and precision drug use, etc. Over the past five years, the department has been granted 8 projects by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2 projects by the Ministry of Science and Technology,1 project by China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, 23 projects by the Provincial Department of Science and Technology and over 75 other projects, with around 20 million in total; the department has been authorized with 5 national invention patents, and published more than 800 peer-reviewed papers, including 51 SCI papers; it won the 2nd prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education (as a participant), the Youth Hospital Pharmacy Award of the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association (3 winners) and the Excellent Clinician Award of the Chinese Medical Association (1 winner).
Whole-stage educational system: The Clinical Pharmacy Department has the complete talent training system, which ranges from college education to continual education and covers whole-process cultivation of Ph.D., master, undergraduate, post-graduation and continual education in clinical pharmacy.
Training of pharmacists: Among the first batch of pilot bases for training clinical pharmacists of the Ministry of Health, West China Hospital has trained more than 100 clinical pharmacists from over ten provinces and municipalities since 2006. Meanwhile, it has participated in the compiling of professional training program. With a reference to the method of training “4+2” clinical pharmacists in developed countries, West China Hospital launched the two-year standard program for training clinical pharmacists in China since 2006. In this way, it has formed the unique standard program of training clinical pharmacists, and opened a new pathway of cultivating clinical pharmacy talents after their graduation.
Social responsibility: Centering on "patient health", the Clinical Pharmacy Department takes social responsibility. With a high sense of duty, the department has initiatively launched WCCP: West China Cooperative Network of Pharmacy. By adhering to the concept of “collaborative construction, co-prosperity and making progress hand in hand”, the department strives to build a platform for efficient communication and interaction among pharmacy practitioners in order to actively promote the development of pharmacy and improve the level of clinical pharmacy research and practice.
The department has held a series of public welfare activities, such as professional lectures, popularization of science, volunteer services and reasonable medication guidance into the community. We annually hold a dozen of national or provincial level academic conferences themed with grassroots pharmacy service, chronic diseases management and oncology pharmacy care, and also continue to support Tibet and Xinjiang on development of pharmacy.
Over 10 staff of the Clinical Pharmacy Department are members of the national emergency medical rescue team, including 4 members of the international emergency medical team (Sichuan, China) which is the worldwide first highest-level non-military international emergency medical team type III, to provide strong guarantee for pharmaceutical services in emergencies.
