The Department of Orthopedic Surgery of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, has been treating patients since 1947. It is one of the first national master and doctor degree awarding stations and postdoctoral research stations, a key discipline of the Ministry of Education and a key clinical department of the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China. The Department ranks the 6th in the Orthopedic Reputation Ranking and Comprehensive Ranking of Chinese Hospitals of Fudan University, and the 3rd in the Scientific and Technological Value of Chinese Academy of Medical Science.
Subspecialties and medical services volume: The Department consists of six subspecialties: joint surgery, spine surgery, traumatic orthopedics, musculoskeletal oncology, sports medicine and podiatry. Western China Center for Joint Reconstructive Surgery, Western China Center for Joint Disease Diagnosis and Treatment, Western China Center for Spine Surgery, Western China Center for Traumatic Orthopedics, and Western China Center for Musculoskeletal Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment are attached to the Department. There are totally six wards in the Department, with nearly 400 beds. The utilization rate of hospital beds is more than 120%. There are 165,000 cases of annual outpatient services and more than 13,000 cases of annual inpatient services. The operation volume is over 12,700 per year.
Excellent talent team: The Department currently has 74 doctors, including 21 professors, 16 associate professors, 14 doctoral supervisors, 3 experts enjoying the special allowance of the State Council and 15 master supervisors. 11 doctors have the academic experience of postdoctoral research. More than 90% of doctors have obtained the doctoral degree. Many of them hold the positions of chairmen, vice chairmen, standing committee member, council member respectively in China Orthopedic Branch, China Orthopedic Surgeon Branch, as well as Sichuan province and Chengdu city orthopedic special committee.
Leading technology: enhanced recovery of orthopedic surgery, complex hip and knee replacement and revision, cervical intervertebral disc replacement, spinal deformity correction, complex trauma emergency and functional reconstruction, bone tumor limb-salvage surgery and prosthesis customization, reconstruction of the knee dislocation, complex ankle trauma and deformity correction, bone and tension tissue engineering, nerve injury repair, spinal cord injury repair, and prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. The Department has successively undertaken nearly 200 national and provincial scientific research projects, with a research fund of more than 80 million yuan. The Department was awarded numerous prizes including the first prize of Science and Technology Progress of the Ministry of Education, the third prize of Science and Technology Progress of the Ministry of Health, and a dozen of first, second and third prizes of science and technology progress of the province and the ministry.
The joint surgery of the orthopedic department of West China Hospital is the vice-chairman and leader of the joint science group of orthopedic branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Difficult Joint Disease in western China. It is in the leading position in the field of enhanced recovery of joint replacement, complex hip and knee replacement and revision. The joint surgery of the Department is the main base of enhanced recovery of joint replacement surgery in China. It has publicized seven expert consensuses on enhanced recovery of joint replacement surgeries and is the training center for building and training the capabilities of enhanced recovery for joint replacement surgeries under the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China.
The Spine Surgery Center serves as the standing member of the orthopedic society of the Chinese medical association, the vice-chairman unit of the Spinal Experts Working Committee of the Chinese Association of Orthopedic Surgeons and the Special Committee on Thoracolumbar under the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Currently, the Spine Surgery Center is the Asia-Pacific AO-Spine Training Base, the Spinal Endoscopy Training Center under the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People's Republic of China and the Center for Scoliosis Treatment in Western China. The Spine Surgery Center owns the following core featured technologies: spinal deformity correction, cervical spine surgery, thoracolumbar anterior approach surgery, and spinal endoscopy.
The Traumatic Orthopedics Center serves as the vice-chairman unit of the West Hand Surgery Center, the Society of Hand Surgery of the Chinese Medical Association, the vice-chairman unit of the Young Experts Working Committee, the Chinese Special Committee on Reparative and Reconstructive Surgery and the chairman unit of the Sichuan Provincial Special Committee on Hand Microsurgery. Currently, it has developed into the most influential orthopedic trauma treatment center in western China. It is a national leader in the field of trauma repair and reconstruction. Some technologies have even reached the internationally advanced level, including: soft tissue and bone defect repair and functional reconstruction, chronic bone infection control and wound repair, limb nerve repair and functional reconstruction, complex bone fracture and joint dislocation treatment, correction of hand and foot deformity.
The Bone Tumor Center serves as the vice-chairman unit of the SICOT Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Committee and the Special Committee on Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. The Center mainly serves patients with spine, pelvis, sacrococcygeal and limb bone and soft tissue tumors with the following core featured technologies: 3D-printing individualized prosthesis replacement, biological fixation tumor prosthesis replacement, routine modular prosthesis replacement, allograft-prosthesis composite joint reconstruction, correction on deformities of extremely severe fibrous dysplasia of limbs, excision and reconstruction for giant sacrococcygeal tumors with abdominal aortic balloon occlusion, hemi-pelvis replacement, large allograft reconstruction, targeted comprehensive treatment for complex or metastatic tumors.
The Sports Medicine Center serves as the chairman unit of Asia-Pacific Sports Medicine APKASS, the deputy director unit of the Sports Medicine Society of the Chinese Medical Association, the vice-chairman unit of the Special Committee on Sports Medicine under Chinese Association of Orthopadic Surgeons and the standing member of the Society of Endoscopy Doctors under Chinese Medical Doctor Association. The center consists of knee joint diagnosis and treatment medical group, shoulder elbow and writs joint diagnosis and treatment medical group, food and ankle joint diagnosis and treatment medical group, and hip joint diagnosis and treatment medical group. Currently, it has become a key sports medicine/arthroscope technology training base in western China.
The Podiatry Center serves as the deputy leader of the Podiatry Group under the Young Experts Committee of Chinese Medical Association and the vice-chairman unit of the SICOT Chinese Podiatry Association. Currently, it is also a key podiatric specialist training center in western China.
The Orthopedic Nursing Team is composed of nursing personnel with high quality, high educational background and high level of capabilities. More than 74% of the nurses have the Ph.D, master or undergraduate educational background. In 2003, it was approved as the first master station recruiting orthopedic nursing postgraduate students and wound caring postgraduate students. In enhanced recovery projects, the team achieved good results in the aseptic of pain care, nutrition provision, sleeping care, psychological care, rehabilitation, and caring for the elder. The enhanced recovery nutrition program is particularly prominent in reducing the fasting time and improving the comfort of patients.
The West China Orthopedics Research Institute aims to gradually build a high-level scientific research platform integrating basic research, clinical application research and application development research with the orientation of clinical needs, and carry out independent research and developmental in orthopedic medical devices, orthopedic biomaterials and other aspects. Certain technical platforms for spinal cord, joint, bone tumor materials and Sino-German Cooperative Trauma Center have been established through the close cooperation and crossover of multiple disciplines such as orthopedic surgery, biomechanics, inorganic materials science, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, polymer materials science, mechanical engineering and artificial intelligence (AI).
