In accordance with the deployment of the National Health Commission, we are required to send a team of professional doctors of general surgery and cardiology with strong expertise and sense of responsibility to carry out one-year aiding task in Sao Tome and Principe. Upon personal application, recommendation by relevant departments and selection by the hospital, we have finally selected Associate Professor Chen Yi of Gastrointestinal Surgery Dept. and Lecturer Zheng Yi of Cardiology Dept. to join the 4th Aiding Team headed by Chen Yi.
On the afternoon of January 24th, a farewell party was held for the 4th Team in the second meeting room at the administrative building of our hospital. Vice Prsident Liu Lunxu made a speech, hoping that the two doctors will attach great importance to the strategy of the State to aid Africa, and try their best to offer medical assistance and promote the integrated growth of the local medical undertaking. Despite of the hard living conditions, cultural difference and other challenges, such task is glorious and our hospital is intended to provide sufficient logistics services for the team members, where necessary, he said. Both Chen Yi and Zheng Yi expressed their desire to work hard to win honor for the State and the hospital. Also, they raised suggestions on work during their work in Africa.
On the evening of January 25th, eight members of the 4th Team and two members of the supervisory work group of the Sichuan Health Commission gathered at Shuangliu International Airport. The staff with the International Exchange Center of Sichuan Health Commission, the HR Department and relevant departments of our hospital and the families of the aiding members bid farewell to the team at the airport.
On the afternoon of February 2nd, the 3rd Team of the medical-aid group to Sao Tome and Principe, which was composed of personnels from WCH, Hospital of Stomatology SCU, Chengdu First People’ Hospital and Chengdu Second People’s Hospital, etc, took the Flight KL891 to arrive at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport from Sao Tome and Principe via Lisbon. The leaders of Sichuan Health Commission, and the representatives from relevant departments and hospitals, as well as their families, received the team at the airport. This marked successful completion of the medical aid task carried out by seven members including Associate Professor Li Ang from the Pancreatic Surgery of our hospital (team leader) and Mo Peng from the Operation and Management Dept. of our hospital.
Over the past year, the 3rd Team worked hard and dared many challenges, and consequently reaped fruitful results. Since the implementation of medical service in Sao Tome and Principe, they had received high comments from local medical staff and residents. Associate Professor Li Ang was granted the honorary title of “Advanced Individual for Foreign Aid in China,” while interpreter Mo Peng was praised in a notice issued by the Health Commission of Sichuan Province.
Associate Professor Li Ang, interpreter Mo Peng, Associate Professor Chen Yi and Lecturer Zheng Yi had upheld the spirit of Chinese medical-aid groups of "daring all hardships to make contributions and striving to heal the wounded and rescuing the dying with love and care." Not only had they served the people of Sao Tome and Principe, but also made great contributions to the Sino-Africa friendship.
