Professor Tang Chengwei awarded "WGO Master" by the World Gastroenterology Organization

On September 21, at the World Congress of Gastroenterology (WCOG 2025), Professor Tang Chengwei from the Department of Gastroenterology of West China Hospital was awarded the title of "WGO Master" by the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO). Professor Geoffrey Metz, the current president of WGO, and Professor Guilherme Macedo, the former president, jointly presented the honorary medal to Professor Tang Chengwei.

As the highest academic honor of the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO), the "Master" title is awarded every four years to the world's top gastroenterology experts. This year, eight gastroenterology experts from different regions around the world were selected to receive the "Master" title. Professor Tang Chengwei is the only awardee from East Asia this time and the third Chinese gastroenterology expert to receive this honor after Professor Xiao Shudong in 2009 and Academician Fan Daiming in 2019.

Professor Tang Chengwei is currently the chair of the Gastroenterology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. The team she leads in the Department of Gastroenterology of West China Hospital has made breakthrough progress in several sub-specialties of gastroenterology, including the liver, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract in recent years. Her award is a reflection of her many years of outstanding contributions to the innovation of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for gastrointestinal diseases and medical education. It also demonstrates the increasing international influence of West China Hospital in the global gastroenterology community. Meanwhile, it shows that Chinese gastroenterology research has formed a continuously developing academic echelon and has an important place on the international stage.
