Division of Surgery, Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine

The Division of Surgery, Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine is affiliated with the West China School of Medicine & West China Hospital, Sichuan University, which ranks among the top three nationally in the first-level discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education. As one of the major pillars of the institute, the division serves as a regional referral center for difficult, complex, severe, and critical colorectal diseases in integrated TCM-Western medicine in Southwest China. It is also a base for research, education, and clinical standardization training, and is recognized as one of the National Western Centers for Pelvic Floor and Anal Disease.

The division is designated as a "Sichuan Provincial Key TCM Colorectal Specialty" development unit. It has 57 inpatient beds, handles over 10,000 outpatient visits annually, and performs nearly 3,600 surgeries per year, with difficult and complex cases accounting for approximately 40%. The division has led or participated in more than 20 national, provincial, ministerial, and municipal research grants and published nearly 100 papers.

Leveraging its rich research achievements, the division has developed a series of unique and highly advantageous surgical procedures:

1. "Segmental Resection with Anoplasty" for circumferential mixed hemorrhoids — completely removes diseased tissue, reduces postoperative recurrence, and minimizes patient pain and surgical complications

2. "Sphincter Fixation with Partial Incision and Seton Drainage Combined with Biological Material Filling" for high complex anal fistula — greatly reduces patient pain while preserving sphincter function as much as possible without compromising cure rates

3. For high perianal multi-space abscesses — employs "Catheter Drainage with Negative Pressure Suction" and staged surgery to minimize resection of diseased tissue and better preserve anal sphincter function

4. For chronic anal fissure — uses "Partial Internal Sphincterotomy with Anal Dilatation and Flap Coverage" to repair the fissure, effectively relieve anal stenosis, and reduce the likelihood of recurrence

The division has established a "Pain-Free Sunshine Ward" using a multimodal preemptive analgesia protocol during the perioperative period to further reduce postoperative pain. Through improved surgical techniques, enhanced perioperative care, and multimodal preemptive analgesia, the division has consistently achieved high treatment efficacy and patient satisfaction, ranking among the top in Southwest China for an extended period.

In recent years, the division has introduced multiple innovations in surgical treatment, perioperative care, pain management, and enhanced recovery for pelvic floor and anal diseases. Several faculty members serve as vice chairs, executive directors, or expert committee members in national colorectal professional societies, and as chairs, standing committee members, or committee members in provincial societies. The division regularly receives visiting physicians from provincial, municipal, and primary-level hospitals, maintains collaborative relationships with major colorectal centers nationwide, and provides long-term technical support to primary healthcare facilities.

Guided by a patient-centered approach and the philosophy of "Research, Innovation, Service, and Care," the division continuously innovates in the diagnosis, treatment, surgical techniques, and perioperative care of pelvic floor and anal diseases, striving to enhance specialized care and service quality. The division has received consistent praise from both patients and peers in the field.
