Liver Transplant Center

The Liver Transplant Center of WCH made history in the late 1970s by performing the first clinical liver transplant in Western China. Over the past decade, under the leadership of renowned hepatobiliary surgeon Professor Yan Lu’nan, the center has completed nearly 800 liver transplants using various surgical techniques. Among these, more than 260 were living donor liver transplants (LDLT), with a surgical success rate of 100%. For patients with benign liver disease, our one, three, and fiveyear survival rates reach 87.4%, 85.2%, and 80.5% respectively – outcomes that lead the country and rank among the best internationally.

Multidisciplinary Expertise
Our team consists of 8 full professors/chief physicians (all trained in Europe, the United States, or Japan), 16 associate professors/associate chief physicians, and over 30 postdoctoral and doctoral fellows.

Research & Education
In recent years, our liver surgery and transplant division alone has been awarded more than 30 national and provincial research grants, including from the National Natural Science Foundation, the “973 Program,” and the “11th FiveYear Plan.” We have received over 10 national and provincial science and technology awards, published more than 1,000 papers in medical journals (including over 100 in leading international journals), and established a postdoctoral research station at Sichuan University – 6 postdoctoral fellows have been enrolled, 4 have completed their programs, and we have graduated 36 PhDs and 50 master’s students.

Advanced Equipment
We are equipped with a full range of imported medical and research devices, including five complete liver transplant systems capable of performing five transplants simultaneously. Key equipment includes:

· Jostra Rotaflow venousvenous bypass pump (Germany)

· Cell saver (USA)

· Toshiba intraoperative color ultrasound and cholangiography system (Japan)

· Soring ultrasonic scalpel and argonbeam coagulator (Germany)

· Microsurgical instruments and operating microscope (Germany)

· CT and MRI (Germany)

· DSA, SPECT, and dualhead singlephoton emission computed tomography (USA)

Our founder – Professor Yan Lyunan
Professor Yan began clinical and experimental research on liver transplantation and liver cancer in the early 1980s. In 1987 and 1993, he twice studied living donor liver transplantation under Professor Ozawa at Kyoto University’s worldrenowned center. He has since visited and collaborated with leading liver transplant centers in the United States, Germany, Australia, and other countries.

He currently serves as Chief of General Surgery, Professor of Surgery, and Doctoral Supervisor, and receives the State Council Special Government Allowance. His academic roles include Standing Member of the Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Vice Chair of the Liver Transplant Group of the Chinese Medical Association, and Chair of the Sichuan Surgical Society. He is EditorinChief of the Chinese Journal of General Surgery: Basics and Clinics and serves on the editorial boards of 14 other journals.

Over the past decade, Professor Yan has performed or supervised more than 1,000 liver surgeries and nearly 800 liver transplants, published over 300 papers, and edited 7 monographs. He has received multiple FirstPrize Science and Technology Awards from the Ministry of Health and Sichuan Province, as well as a ThirdPrize National Science and Technology Progress Award.
