Nobel laureate Dr. Tim Hunt visits WCH

On June 5, the 2001 Nobel Prize winner in physiology or medicine, Dr. Tim Hunt visited West China School of Medicine, SCU, to hold discussion and exchange with young scholars and students; he gave an academic lecture with a theme of “review the scientific research: my path to Nobel Prize”.

In the morning, Dr. Tim Hunt visited State Key Laboratory of Tumor Biotherapy, watched the students’ test procedures with great interest and had a cordial talk with them to inquire about the test progress and discuss about the problems.

Then, Dr. Tim Hunt discussed with about 30 young scientists and student representatives from this School, answered their questions and shared his feelings and experience on scientific research, encouraging everyone to make more efforts in this way. Dr. Tim Hunt highly praised the students for their energetic performance, and even asked for 20 minutes more communication.

On the afternoon, Dr. Tim Hunt gave a lecture to nearly 400 staff and students of the School. In the lecture, Dr. Tim Hunt presented his track record of scientific research with many personal stories, sharing graphically his experience in winning Nobel Prize. He expressed his desire to guide more young people to scientific research and gain joy and success from scientific research.


Background:

Tim Hunt is the retired “chief scientist” from Cancer Research UK (CRUK). In 1982, Dr. Hunt found cyclin and thereby won 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine along with Lelan Hartwell and Paul Nurse. The Campus Tour Activity of Nobel Prize Winners in China was initiated by Nobel Media, aimed at making the young Chinese scientists and students gain a closer understanding of the stories from the Nobel Prize winners.  In addition to Chengdu, Dr. Hunt also gave academic lecture in Fudan University, Shanghai, to share his own story.
