In October 2022, following the deployment by the National Health Commission and through personal applications, departmental recommendations, and hospital selection, West China Hospital appointed Dr. Zhang Hao, Associate Professor of the Pancreatic Surgery Department, and Dr. Fang Dengfeng, Associate Professor of the Anesthesia Department, to join the 24th Chinese Medical Team to Mozambique for medical aid missions in Africa. Dr. Zhang Hao was appointed as the team leader.

During their stay at Maputo Central Hospital in Mozambique, the 24th Chinese Medical Team provided cholera prevention and control recommendations to the Mozambican Ministry of Health. They collaborated with local medical teams to successfully treat critically ill patients with complex abdominal crush injuries and a patient with massive right-sided liver cancer rupture and hemorrhage. They also performed minimally invasive anterior approach laparoscopic renal cystectomy. The team opened health consultation channels to serve overseas Chinese and conducted a large-scale "Warm Spring" free clinic event. Additionally, they utilized the "Smart Simulation" laparoscopic training system donated by our hospital to train 30 local surgeons, significantly improving their laparoscopic operation skills. In June of this year, with the assistance of Dr. Zhang Hao and Dr. Fang Dengfeng, a delegation of seven, including Atílio, the Director of the General Surgery Department at Maputo Central Hospital, visited our hospital for an exchange program. The medical team not only safeguarded the health of the local population but also actively promoted the implementation of the "China-Africa Paired Hospital Cooperation Mechanism" project, contributing to the enhancement of Sino-African friendship. Their efforts were highly praised by local medical staff, residents, and Chinese institutions.
