Colorectal Cancer Center

Overview

The Colorectal Cancer Center of West China Hospital, Sichuan University is the first multidisciplinary center for colorectal cancer in Southwest China, integrating surgery, medical oncology, radiotherapy, and interventional medicine. It is also one of the earliest institutions in China to implement multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) for colorectal cancer.

The West China Colorectal Cancer MDT team is among the first five MDT demonstration bases in the country, handling over 500 complex MDT consultations annually. The Center provides “one-stop, comprehensive, high-quality” diagnosis, treatment, and nursing services, covering the full continuum of care—from early screening and individualized treatment to palliative support in advanced stages.


Capacity & Team

The Center has:

  • 94 inpatient beds at Jinjiang Campus, or 155 beds across multiple campuses
  • Over 3,000 colorectal cancer surgeries annually

The medical team includes:

  • 6 physicians with senior professional titles
  • 6 physicians with associate senior titles
  • 3 doctoral supervisors
  • 11 master’s supervisors

Professor Zhou Zongguang is a CJ Scholar Distinguished Professor, recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, a nationally recognized expert with outstanding contributions, Chairman of the IASGO China Minimally Invasive Surgery Society, and Editor-in-Chief of the national “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” textbook Surgery.


Clinical Services & Specialties

The Center focuses on colorectal tumor diseases and provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care, including:

  • Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC)

Conditions treated include:

  • Early-, intermediate-, and metastatic colorectal cancer
  • Recurrent and refractory colorectal cancer
  • Hereditary colorectal cancer
  • Peritoneal metastases
  • Rare colorectal tumors (e.g., gastrointestinal stromal tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, malignant melanoma)
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis)

Expertise & Innovation

The Center continuously develops and optimizes individualized neoadjuvant and adjuvant treatment strategies. It holds a leading position in China in:

  • Minimally invasive colorectal surgery
  • Precision treatment for advanced tumors
  • Surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease

The team has pioneered both internationally and domestically in:

  • Laparoscopic functional sphincter-preserving surgery for ultra-low rectal cancer
  • Laparoscopic selective lateral lymph node dissection for rectal cancer

The Center is also a national leader in ultra-low sphincter-preserving surgery using intersphincteric resection (ISR).


Academic Contribution

The Center has led or participated in the development of numerous clinical guidelines and consensus statements and has proposed multiple original surgical techniques, contributing significantly to the advancement of colorectal cancer care.
