Recently, Prof. Wang’s team from the Department of Liver Surgery of West China Hospital published a research paper titled Residual Cavity Hydrops Initially Misdiagnosed as Recurrent Hepatic Echinococcosis on The Lancet Infectious Diseases, a magazine of international influence in the field of infectious diseases. Wu Kan, a postgraduate student of our hospital, is the first author, Prof. Wang Wentao of the Department of Liver Surgery, is the corresponding author, and West China Hospital of Sichuan University is the first author’s institute.

This paper explained the key points of identifying the postoperative complications and recurrence of complex echinococcosis of livers. Prof. Wang’s team conducted multiple comparisons and comprehensive analyses on the bile tumor (bile cysts) and recurrent cystic echinococcosis arising from the postoperative bile leakage in the original operation area, based on the results of long-term imageological examination and antibody screening of echinococcosis after operation; disclosed the rules of occurrence and development of the postoperative complications of the hepatic echinococcosis, as well as the relevant prognosis; pointed out the situation in the follow-up survey after operation for echinococcosis and the challenges encountered; and finally proposed reasonable countermeasures.

At present, Prof. Wang’s team is conducting systematic researches on clinical hot topics and difficulties in respect of echinococcosis such as nosogenesis, early diagnosis, liver autotransplantation, and hepatectomy. As of now, the team has produced systematic foundation and clinical research results of echinococcosis, and published 15 articles about echinococcosis collected by SCI.
