Endoscopic transcecal appendectomy was successfully performed by Prof. Bing Hu’s team.

Recently, a patient was referred to Endoscopy Center of West China Hospital after a lateral spreading tumor (LST) near the appendiceal orifice was found. Endoscopic submucosal dissection was not performed because of the risk of residual tumor in the appendiceal orifice, which could not be completely resected, and may also bring greater difficulties to the later treatment. After discussion with the gastrointestinal surgery team, endoscopic transcecal appendectomy was attempted.

On April, 24th, the LST approximately 5 cm in size and the appendix were successfully resected by Prof. Bing Hu’s team. The procedure time was 3 hours. The condition of the patient was stable. A liquid diet was allowed on postoperative day 3. The patient was discharged one week later without complications.

Appendectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures, and endoscopic resection is generally regarded as an impossible task. However, this world-class highly difficult procedure was successfully performed by Prof. Bing Hu’s team and gastrointestinal surgery team, after careful preoperative evaluation, intraoperative calm handling and careful postoperative management. This is also the second case of endoscopic transcecal appendectomy successfully implemented by Prof. Bing Hu’ team. The related paper has been published on Endoscopy, which is the top international journal in the field of endoscopy.
