On July 8, 2024, as part of the 2024
International Exchange Camp, West China School of Medicine (WCSM) held its
first Model International Conference for Medical Students in the Houde
Building. The event saw the participation of 32 international students from
nine foreign institutions, along with MBBS international students and
fifth-year clinical medicine students from the class of 2021 at WCSM, and
students from Peking University Health Science Center and the Army Medical
University, totaling over 200 attendees.
The conference was a full simulation of an
international academic meeting process, including both poster presentations and
oral reports. The entire event was organized and implemented by students from WCSM,
aiming to familiarize students with the rules of international academic
conferences and enhance their organizational skills, academic communication
abilities, and global competence.
At 5 pm, the poster exchange session took
place in four conference rooms of the Houde Building, showcasing 28 outstanding
posters submitted by students from the University of Sydney, National
University of Singapore, University of Alberta, Bashkir State Medical
University and Sechenov University in Russia, Catholic University of the Sacred
Heart in Italy, University of Oviedo in Spain, the Army Medical University, and
WCSM. Four international teachers and four professors from Peking University
Health Science Center, the Army Medical University, and WCSM served as judges.
During the poster exchange, students engaged in lively discussions with the
judges, creating a strong academic atmosphere.
At 6:30 pm, the oral report session was
held in the multifunctional hall of the Houde Building, with ten teams of
Chinese and international students participating. The topics of the reports
included surveys and analyses of medical students' living habits, factors
affecting grades, course selection methods, as well as clinical or basic
research topics they were involved in. Each team fully demonstrated their own
style, and the atmosphere was vibrant. Judges from China and abroad provided
feedback on aspects such as language, structure, logic, and demeanor.
Professor David Garth Ferning from the
University of Liverpool of the UK commented on the conference, affirming the
organization and the performance of the students, while also offering
constructive suggestions and advice.
In the end, ten posters were recognized
with first, second, and third prizes; in the oral report session, three teams
from the Army Medical University, KU Leuven in Belgium, and WCSM won first
prize, three others received second prize, and four teams third prize.
The first Model International Conference
for Medical Students fully demonstrated the organizational skills, academic
communication abilities, and global competence of medical students from WCSM,
helping to promote friendly exchanges between Chinese and international medical
students and to improve the hospital's diversified international training
system.
