On November 14, the "News Conference for 2019 China’s Hospital Ranking" hosted by the Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University was held in Shanghai. At the conference, the Institute officially released the 2019 China’s Hospital Ranking List, and West China Hospital ranked second in the country for 11 consecutive years.

In addition to the comprehensive ranking of national hospitals, the conference also released the reputation and comprehensive ranking lists for 40 specialties. In the comprehensive ranking of specialties, the Department of Anesthesiology of West China Hospital ranks first in its kind, five specialties (radiology, pathology, emergency medicine, geriatrics, and urology) ranked second, and four specialties (respiratory, general surgery, neurosurgery and rehabilitation medicine) ranked third. There are a total of 10 WCH specialties ranked in the top three, 17 specialties ranked in the top five, and 27 specialties ranked in the top ten.

The evaluation method of the rankings takes the discipline level and clinical specialty reputation as the core, and values annual scientific research outputs. This evaluation method has been recognized and applied by many institutes in the industry. This year, the number of experts participating in the assessment has reached a new high-from 4,879 in the previous year to 5,210, and the effective response rate reached 64.53%, far exceeding the response rate of the best hospital assessment in the United States. Due to the scientific nature of the evaluation method, the results of the ranking list have been widely recognized by the medical industry and have become an important indicator for guiding the discipline construction for Chinese hospitals. At the same time, the lists are often used as a reference for the public to find good hospitals for complicated and sever diseases.
